Pat Archibald
We are delighted to welcome Pat Archibald back to The Silver Thimble on several occassions in 2012. Due to popular demand we have asked her to teach a variety of workshops. See below for details and call us to book as her classes are very popular.

Japanese art is renowned for its classic simplicity and purity of form. Pat has made many pieces inspired by Japanese style and often uses the stylised family crest symbols in her work either as quilted, appliquéd or even painted and foiled designs. On the course choose one or more family crest symbols to develop in a variety of ways into a fabric panel to then quilt, add surface embellishment and stitchery.

‘City lights, Sunset Nights’
Take inspiration from a photograph or postcard of a sunset and work with glowing coloured fabrics to create a patchwork backdrop of the setting sun silhouetting a city skyline or landscape. Use metallic foiling techniques to fire the windows or create twinkling village lights for your scene. Add your own personal touches to your nightscape and finally add quilting, stitching and embellishments to give dimension and texture.

Use your travels as inspiration for colour and fabric choices to make a quilted textile wall hanging. Learn how to use colour as an evocative tool to give energy to your work and explore the stitching process to add layers of texture and meaning to your finished piece. This week will enable you to
• have a heightened awareness of the emotional content of colour and will be working towards harnessing the energy of colour to produce a thought provoking textile piece.
• learn how simple stitching techniques can provide a secondary layer of patterning and meaning to support the colour choices.

About Pat:
In her own words –
“Quiltmaking and teaching are passions of mine. My love of fabric started at an early age and having been co-owner of the shop, 'Purely Patchwork' in Scotland for ten years I have been able to share my love for fabrics and quilting with quiltmakers from all over the world.
My travels are a constant source of inspiration to me and probably my best known works to date relate to my Kilimanjaro climb. However, recent work has been about locations closer to home - the Highlands and Islands of Scotland - but adventures in Australia and New Zealand in 2003 are proving to be very inspirational!”
