Hand Quilting with Lilian Hedley

Lilian is a leading authority on “DURHAM QUILTING” and we commence this 3 day course by looking at a selection of 'Durham Quilts', some antique and some of Lilian's own.
For the course you can choose from a variety of projects such as a wholecloth or strippy quilt - cushion, wall hanging, cot quilt or full size bed quilt?

Caroline introduces you to Goldwork with this lovely traditional flower design using specialist threads.

An introduction to raised embroidery – during this 2 day course, you will prepare your background fabric using acrylic paints, foils and a stamping block to create a unique and interesting backdrop.

Choose then to stitch a dragonfly, butterfly or bee with its wired wings, beads and a variety of stitches to finish.

Sampler Quilt Course with Nicola and Kath

Tassel Making with Nicola

Nicola will show you how to make a lovely tassel in the day. You will learn how to cover a wooden mould for the tassel top, wire a skirt and  make the suspension cord

Introduction to Felt making – Jackie will encourage you to take inspiration from a variety of subjects when designing your piece of felt suitable for a cushion front, small wall hanging or picture to frame. These could also be embroidered at a later date.

Goldwork for Improvers with Caroline Goodrich

If you have done the beginners goldwork or have some experience of basic goldwork then this delightful contempory design of Caroline's takes you through to the next stage.

Stumpwork Sheep with Nicola and Kath

2 day course - Fridays 7th & 28th May 10.00 to 3.00pm

This is a fun workshop inspired by Chris Hammacotts, ‘Doris’ the sheep. During this 2 day course you will prepare your background fabric using paints, foils, quilting etc.  You will then stitch your sheep using French or bullion knots before moving on to the fun part – creating the character for your sheep!  Choose from one of our examples such as ‘Baaarbie’- all pink and fluffy!,’ City Baaanker’- suave with Bowler Hat and Tie. Or your own choice could be, ‘Goth’- lots of black and body piercing, or perhaps ‘Flower Power’- bright colours, fun and funky!

Create a background with a curved seam using Lynne Edwards new Wavy Border Ruler and then learn how to create translucent images using layers of nets and sheers.

Ribbonwork Flower Heart with Nicola

Using nothing more than a simple ‘running’ stitch, Nicola will show you how to create lovely flowers and leaves using a variety of ribbons. Create an arrangement to adorn a wooden heart and finish it with lace and beads ready to hang.

Rose Sampler Quilt with Kath
3 day course – Mondays 26th July, 11th October
 & 17th Jan 2011 10.00 to 3.00pm

This quilt is made up of blocks which are hand appliquéd in a colour scheme of your choice. You can make a quilt any size you wish – intersperse the appliquéd blocks with traditional quilted blocks, add an appliquéd border and create your own family heirloom. With kind permission of Rosemary Makhan -  a copy of her book is included in the price of the course and gives you a choice of twenty different designs to choose from. This is suitable for beginners and experienced stitchers.

Quillow with Nicola and Kath
2 day course - Mondays 9th & 16th August

Quillow – a quilt inside a pillow! Make this quick and easy quilt using either ‘jelly rolls’, ‘charm packs’ or fabrics of your choice before making up into the Quillow.

Kimono Quilt or Wall hanging with Kath
2 day course – Mondays 6th September & 8th November
 10.00 to 4.00pm

This is based on a quilt pattern that Kath did at a workshop a few years ago. We now have permission from Sue Propst to teach her version with a variation added by Kath. This is an ideal quilt for using all those fabulous Japanese fabrics you couldn’t resist but then didn’t know what to do with. This is machine piecing and you will do a different version on each of the two days. You can stop there or make as many blocks to make a wall hanging or a full size quilt as you want.

Stumpwork ‘Tree of Life’ with Nicola
3 day course – Mondays 13th Sept, 18th Oct,

Raised embroidery - traditional ‘tree of life’ design with wired leaves, padded fruit, an owl perched, hidden in the tree and insects to complete the picture.  Suitable for beginners and improvers

This is the week to get prepared for decorating your house or table or for making gifts for family and friends – if you can bear to part with what you have made!  Including Snowmen garland, Crazy chicks door stop, Jester gift bags, Celtic Tree wall hanging, Table runner, Ribbon Flower & Wooden Heart gift, Santa’s washing line and more!

Patchwork in Miniature with Kath
Friday 3rd December  10.00 to4.00pm

If you like working in a small scale, have limited space, want to make dolls house quilts or just like a challenge then this is one for you. Take any patchwork pattern reduce it to i/12th scale and you have a miniature.. Try your hand at traditional hand quilted whole cloths but in miniature. Use cotton patchwork fabrics or even silk – you won’t need much fabric for these quilts!. Come along to this workshop and have fun.

Make use of our well equipped, comfortable and spacious studio - classes are small, relaxed and welcoming - a good place to learn in.
